Captains Steph Dutton Heidi Tiura, founders of Sanctuary Cruises, are back at the helm again and it is better than ever. They've put over $20K into Sanctuary and she looks great. They're limiting capacity to ensure an optimum experience. But what hasn't changed is how they work around marine life: carefully, with great respect and always with the creatures' well-being in mind. Here are a few shots from Sanctuary Cruises' weekend whale and dolphin trips 8/14-17. The dolphins, humpbacks and killer whales were all great. Unfortunately, Heidi (or the camera; she'd like to credit the camera for the loss) dumped the best video before it was saved, but there are some cool shots here. We saw four different groups of killer whales over the weekend. Some of the few shots not lost are included. Then you see Risso's dolphins, the big, blunt-headed dolphins with tall dorsal fins. They're moving slowly in these shots and you can see them as they rise to the surface, reflecting back the true color of the sea. Next are the lovely common dolphins--usually our winter dolphins!--riding our bow wave. This was a nursery pod, females and babies, which we saw with the Risso's and northern right whale dolphins (the sleek, black dolphins near the end who have no dorsal fin, which is same for right whales). The very last shot is of Moss Landing from sea. The tall stacks to the power plant are great landmarks. See you out there.
