8 I walked a few steps behind Selena, watching her dark hair sway with every step she took. Someone stepped in front of me blocking my access to the lunch table. "Excuse me." I tried to push past. "You said we needed to talk." A familiar husky voice spoke. I looked up to see Joe standing before me. "Now?" He smiled. "Why not?" Joe grabbed me by my arm and guided me towards the cafeteria exit. My gaze connected with Selena's. Her mouth hung open as she watched me with Joe. I gave her an apologetic smile. I was greeted with blaring sunlight. There wasn't a whisper of wind as Joe and I walked across the grass. We took shelter under one of the large trees. Joe plopped himself down, the large trunk of the tree supporting him. "So..." I sat opposite him. My fingers automatically entangled themselves into the grass and started pulling out blades of grass. "What did you want to talk about?" Joe asked. He stretched out his legs and placed his hands behind his head. I sat silently carefully choosing my words. "About last night... With Taylor. What was... it?" Joe smirked. "You sure you want to know?" "Obviously if I'm asking." Sarcasm coated my words. "Demons." He said simply. I stared at his straight face trying to figure him out. "Like devil demons?" "You could say that. They're tortured souls who have escaped from hell, to put it simply. They possess a human body so they can hurt us and cause havoc." Joe explained. I laughed loudly. "Are you serious?" Joe showed no sign of humor, which was odd to see. My laughter instantly died. "Oh god. You are serious." My breathing became heavy as I absorbed everything in. "Demi, calm down." Joe reached forward and placed both his hands on my shoulders. I looked deep into his eyes, something that I had not really taken notice of. They were a deep chocolate brown with specks of a lighter brown. I felt my heaving chest slow down. I broke my gaze away from his and let my head fall. Joe then ran his hands down my arms and pulled my hands away from the grass. He clasped them tightly. "How about I drive you home this afternoon?" I smiled and met his eyes once more. "Sounds good." The bell rang harshly bringing me back to reality. "See you then." Joe stood up, letting go of my hands, and walked away leaving me under the tree. I counted down every second of my last period wanting it to be over with. But once the bell rang I felt a wave of nervousness come over me. I took my time packing away my things feeling scared to face Joe. When I finally got out, I spotted him instantly. He was leaning against a dark car, an Impala. I approached him. A smile lit up his face when he saw me, causing one to grow on my face too. "Ready?" He questioned. I nodded and got into the car. The ride was mostly silent, but it was fine by me. I just stared at Joe, watching his every move. Occasionally he would turn his head and send me a smile. My stomach did a flip every time. "Wanna come in?" I asked him once he had pulled into my driveway. "Sure." He replied. I quickly mashed my house key into the front door. Joe followed behind me as we walked in. "Dad! I'm home!" There was no answer.
