In this final episode of A DAY IN NAFTAVILLE, strobx1 takes you on a "tour" of the "New" Muskegon Michigan.Muskegon was once part of the "Arsenal of Democracy". But the town is trying to "reinvent" itself after being hit hard by NAFTA, "Globalization and so called "Fair Trade" International agreements. These caused many plant closings and the loss of 100's and even 1000's of jobs. Muskegon had the 1st fully enclosed downtown shopping mall in the State of Michigan which covered several city blocks. The streets were simply covered with a roof attached to the remaining buildings. A new mall (The LAKES MALL) was built south of town and soon the Muskegon Mall's only tenant moved. Unable to find a buyer, it sat abandoned for years until it was torn down in 2003. Now a new Muskegon is emerging with new buildings one of which houses the "Culinary Arts Institute of Michigan". The old "Century Club" is now the "Hagg Gallery " selling "high end" furniture. The 6 story "Hackley Bank" Building is being turned into condominiums. The Faurenthal Center for the performing arts is the Crowning Jewel of the Down town.Built in the 1920's, the magnificent theater escaped the "wreckers ball" of "Urban Renewal". It houses the Miss Michigan Pageant and is where the West Michigan Symphony plays amongst other major acts such as Maynard Ferguson. The Hackley Mansion Hume Homes are examples of "Lumber Baron" Mansions dating to the 1880,s and are open for tour. You can take the LAKE EXPRESS high speed car ferry to Muskegon from Milwaukee and then there's Lake Michigan, the "Lake that looks like an Ocean"!
