A great story in which I would only criticise the the pious discourse of the unfortunate Helen Burns, which sounded like a well translated speech by the Pope, and secondly that the account right at the end of what happened to that unsympathetic pietistic cold fish St. John did not deserve such a prominent place. Maybe the idea of both was to pacify the many prudes of the time outraged by Rochester's excesses.
